Portland, Oregon convention held September 27-30, 2012

Event Date: Thursday, September 27th, 2012 at 5:00pm

World Wings International moves West from the home of the midnight ride of Paul Revere in Boston to the home of Paul Revere and the Raiders in Portland!  Join us and discover that whether your suitcase holds hiking boots and binoculars or designer heels and shades, you'll find plenty of activities—and trails—to enjoy in Portland.

Portland is known as "The City of Roses and is a walk-able, vibrant, and beautiful city. In our lovely Great Northwest, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, the Columbia River Gorge and the Pacific Ocean are all within an hour and a half drive from the city center. There is no sales tax, food tax or beverage tax. Our goal is to make this convention affordable, entertaining and just plain FUN!

We were fortunate to book the historic and luxurious Benson Hotel. Built in 1913 by Simon Benson, a Portland lumber baron, philanthropist and visionary, the hotel is commonly called "The Gem of Portland." Every president since President Taft has stayed at this historic hotel in "The Presidential" suite which will be appropriately renamed "The Clipper Club" during our convention. Completely renovated in 1991 and refurbished in 2010/2011, The Benson is graced by Italian marble floors, Austrian crystal chandeliers and a grand lobby finished with rare Circassian walnut from the forests of Imperial Russia. It truly is the perfect hotel for us as it is elegant, relaxing and located in the heart of downtown Portland. We will be the only convention at the hotel.

The room rates for our convention are Classic Queen, Deluxe King and Deluxe Double Double and are all $149.00 plus occupancy tax. The Executive King is $159.00 + tax which could also accommodate one of the 15 available rollaway beds. The Benson junior suite is available for $199.00 + tax and the Executive junior suite is $219 + tax. If you have recently won the lottery, the Penthouse Suite is available for $600.00 and The Grand Piano Suite is available for only $1200.00! (And the "after" parties are in your room.) Please note - we have 52 of the 59 double rooms allocated to us. There are no other double rooms available.

We have so many great, exciting events planned. Of course our "Welcome" cocktail party will be held at the hotel. The chef and the bartender are both "Winners of Excellence," so first-rate northwest cuisine and beverages will be featured.

We are planning a trip up the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, with a photo opportunity stop at Multnomah Falls on the way to Skamania County, Washington for an old-fashioned barn dance and barbecue. Jeans or denim are required! We will be crossing the Columbia River via the famous "Bridge of the Gods", which is a treat in itself!

Saturday night we will be traveling through the Willamette Valley to the Evergreen Aviation Museum to dine and dance under the wings of the famous "Spruce Goose", designed and built by Howard Hughes during World War II. In keeping with the theme of vintage aircraft on display, we are hoping that everyone will dress in the vintage era of the 40's...or in your VINTAGE Pan Am uniforms. This will be an evening to remember.

Of course we have lots of optional tours available such as Mount St. Helens, which erupted in 1980, a tour of the Willamette Valley wineries, a comprehensive City Tour, The Mount Hood loop that includes lunch at the famous Timberline Lodge and for the adventuresome, a free guided hike of Forest Park, the largest urban park in the United States. We are all looking forward to showing off the great Northwest. Our Indian summers will provide everyone with a wonderful setting to enjoy this great event. Speaking of weather- be sure to include a jacket in case it gets cool and a slicker or raincoat in case of what we Oregonians call "liquid sunshine."
